Chief Benedict started his fire career in 1989 doing various internships with structural and wildland departments while getting his associates degree in fire science at Portland Community College. In 1994 he became a full-time staff with Pendleton Fire Department. Matt continued his service and was promoted to Lieutenant and was promoted again in 2008 to Captain. In 2013, he was promoted to Assistant Chief of Pendleton Fire. In 2009 he became the Fire Chief for Helix Fire Department.

Matt became the Fire Chief for Cannon Beach Fire in 2017. He also graduated from Eastern Oregon University with a bachelors in Fire Service Administration and a minor in marketing. 

His favorite movie is the Goonies and his favorite book is Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer and in his off time he enjoys traveling and hanging out with his wife and dogs.

Fire Certifications: Firefighter 2, AO -Pump, AO -Aerial, Strike Team/Task Force, Division/Group Supervisor (in progress), Fire Instructor 2, Fire Officer 4, Hazardous -Material Operations, Hazardous-Material Incident Commander, Company Inspector, and Fire Inspector 2 (to only list a few),
